What is a Xiaomi phone

All Xiaomi smartphones in the test

In its 10-year company history, Xiaomi has established an almost unmanageable number of smartphones and smartphone brands. It all started with the Xiaomi Mi 1, which was launched in 2010. Today, the equipment is nostalgic at best: just a 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU and 1 gigabyte of RAM ticked under the 4.3-inch display of the Mi 1 equipped with Android 2.3.

Eleven years later, the current successor is simply called Xiaomi Mi 11. The display area has roughly doubled with a diameter of 6.81 inches, the number of processor cores has grown from two to eight and the cell phone is available with 8 gigabytes of RAM.

Xiaomi, Redmi, Pocophone and Black Shark

The present also means that Xiaomi has become more confusing. Under the brand of the same name, cell phones of the upper middle class and flagship smartphones appear today. The Chinese have transferred the business with cheaper devices to the sister brand Redmi.

The devices are known for an extremely good price / performance ratio, which Xiaomi primarily achieves through the use of cheaper components. The choice does not suffer. From less than a hundred euros devices like the Xiaomi Redmi Go to top devices like the Redmi K20 Pro for over 300 euros, there is a model for almost every purpose.

Xiaomi started the sub-brands Pocophone and Black Shark relatively late:

  • The first Pocophone F1 appeared in 2018 with upper-class hardware and an excellent price / performance ratio. Since then, three more models have appeared.
  • Black Shark has so far released four devices that are specifically aimed at gamers. Key data: Huge displays (up to 7.1 inches), strong CPU with very good graphics performance (Snapdragon 865) and a design that is quite unique compared to other smartphones.
