Speeches that moved the republic

Introduction

Is Napoleon right when he said that rousing speakers are rarely good politicians? The reverse is certainly true: even good politicians rarely succeed in giving a speech that not only inspires supporters, but also creates reflection or even a change of heart in other camps. The book at hand documents those 'great moments of the republic' in which fundamental decisions were announced or made concrete in the speeches of the politicians. It offers the essential speech passages in their wording and traces their environment and the political impact.
