Guide - combining colors

Learn all about color combinations and how colors are properly combined. I keep getting questions about color combinations. Which color goes with which and which colors shouldn't be combined and which color actually suits me?

We will answer your questions and explain how colors work and are combined so that from now on you only buy clothes that really suit you and your wardrobe!

Apparently women have a better grasp of colors and color combinations than men. We ask ourselves “does that really go together?”, “Green to yellow? Isn't that much too colorful? "

Colors can quickly unsettle and confuse you, which is why most men usually wear neutral tones such as black, white or gray. Of course you can conjure up a great look from these tones, but gray, black and white always get boring.

Fortunately, you don't have to have a female instinct for colors, it is completely sufficient if you understand the good old color wheel. Some of you will surely know it from your art class and by now you will realize that the art class was not a complete waste of time.

Combining colors is an important part of fashion and therefore belongs in our style guide for men, where you can find out more about combinations.

The color wheel contains twelve colors at the outermost point. The primary colors red, yellow and blue, the secondary colors orange, purple and green, which are mixed from the primary colors. The remaining colors are intermediate stages that are also created when mixing primary and secondary colors; some of these are also referred to as tertiary colors. Now we come back to the art class in elementary school. You take your ink box and add white to your color, what happens? Correct! The color becomes lighter, the more white the lighter the color. On the other hand, if you add black, the color becomes darker and darker. Baby eggs easy! But we don't want to go much deeper. It is much more important that you understand what the respective position of the color in the color wheel tells you and what it says for your color combination.

Analog colors

Analog colors are right next to each other. E.g. yellow and yellow-green are right next to each other. They are analog and therefore easy to combine. Simply choose a color from the color wheel and add analog colors to your outfit, e.g. in the form of accessories. You should also pay attention to warm and cold colors.

It is easier to stick to either warm (red, yellow, orange) or cold (blue, green, purple) colors. Combinations of warm and cold are of course not prohibited. For example, combinations of two cold and one warm colors, such as a blazer in navy, a blue shirt and a red tie or scarf, work wonderfully.

Complementary colors

Complementary colors are directly opposite on the color wheel. Red and green are good examples. These colors are difficult to combine as they are completely opposite. Green trousers with a red T-shirt are just a little too much of a good thing for the human eye.

The human eye does not perceive this combination as harmonious, so you have to trick a bit by adding white or black to the respective color. The color tone becomes lighter or darker, so you bring calm to the topic and the color becomes a bit more neutral. Of course, you can also just wear something neutral between the colors. For example, a white T-shirt between the blue jeans and the brown jacket.

What looks good and what doesn't, however, requires a little experimentation. Complementary colors can, however, also harmonize very well, such as a dark olive green and a bright red or a dark blue together with a shade of brown. So it is not excluded that these colors can be combined, it just requires a little more sensitivity when dealing with colors.

Contrast colors

Contrast colors are exactly three colors apart on the color wheel. Blue and red are classic examples. These colors can be combined better again. It is best to make sure that one of the colors is a little darker. So if you choose red, navy is used. That looks more harmonious and round. For our color blocking friends, this is of course exactly the right place. Red to blue blocks perfectly. However, a bit of tact is required here too, because not all colors that are three color fields apart go well with each other.

In general, you can't go wrong with black, white and gray. Do you have colorful pants and don't really know what goes with them? A white, black or gray t-shirt is always okay. So before you go out on the streets disguised as a parrot or Easter egg, you should go for the more boring variant.

Not to be neglected are brown, beige and olive, which are also very neutral and match almost every color in the color wheel (here you can find more information on how to combine brown). But your eye is also required. You can find out how to combine individual colors in our style guide, which has already been linked above.

That's it already. Now you know the most important thing about color combinations. Of course, your own taste is always the most important thing. If you do not find your combination good, although the colors in the color wheel are next to each other, you prefer to use a different color so that the feel-good factor fits. If you have any questions, just write a comment. We'll definitely find a good combination.
