The right shelter for guinea pigs: stall in the test and comparison

Hardly anything is as annoying as buying a stable at a high price, which then falls apart after six months. Or you can choose a nice guinea pig pen, which is then very impractical to clean.

Since we use or have used a large number of stalls of different models, we know that most guinea pig stalls are neither weatherproof, nor durable or stable. Many are not even marten-proof.

We have actually tested the stables listed here and can therefore compare their quality and suitability in real life. However, they are never as high quality as self-built stables. If you are technically skilled, it is advisable to build it yourself.

However, there are a few models that have proven to be quite solid and functional, and with a bit of care, they also have a decent life expectancy.

Important! Guinea pigs must never be locked in stables, not even “only at night”! It always has to be Marten-proof enclosure be cultivated!

What should you consider when buying?

  • metal as a substrate reacts with the urine and rusts, so it is unsuitable for guinea pigs. Plastic tubs are more suitable.
  • Many stables are made up of very unstable material (thinnest pressboard with filling), what kind of wood was used? If necessary, replace the rear wall.
  • Has the stable enough doorsso that you can go anywhere to clean? Some stables are difficult to clean because areas are inaccessible.
  • Almost all have stables extremely low manure pansso that they are hardly usable. In addition, they often jam when pulling in and out.
  • A stable is suitable never to be locked up the guinea pigs, because they are also active at night and want to move. Can you simply add a marten-proof outdoor enclosure to the stable? What has to be rebuilt for this?
  • Some locks / stalls are not marten proof. Please secure all doors of the standard stables with hinges and locks.
  • Multi-tier pens almost always have ramps that are too steep and unsecured for guinea pigs. These must be secured at the side and less steeply attached!

Guy 4-season

Our test winner is this stable from Kerbl for the following reasons:

    • solid workmanship, durable (all others have already disintegrated at the same time!)
    • Plexiglass panels to slide in for the winter in bad weather
    • Insulation and thick outer walls, but no mold growth
    • Stable bitumen roof that lasts for a long time
    • Additional built-in floor as a retreat
    • Stable plastic as a tub
    • You can get mucking out everywhere, three doors
    • nice look

However, the stable also has a few small ones disadvantagethat are not ideal:

  • Too low a manure tray (makes mucking out more difficult)
  • The manure tray occasionally gets stuck and freezes in winter
  • No side door to build a continuous freewheel on it (necessary for species-appropriate keeping!)
  • one-story instead of two-story (if you add a daytime run to it, the guinea pigs can more easily jump onto the roof and thus escape from the run)

Dimensions: 127 x 66 x 110 cm

Selling price:The price is € 212.80 and is reasonable in our opinion.

Cat house from running rabbit gmbh
Having a lot of guinea pigs-SSince cat houses are extremely short-lived and poorly made, it is worth taking a look at cat houses. This model is:

  • durable and made of solid material
  • isolated
  • well made and high quality
  • and can simply be placed in the marten-proof enclosure as a refuge.

The biggest disadvantage is the lack of a floor pan. However, this can be made to measure.

However, it is relatively small and therefore only suitable as an additional shelter.

That is why we give a clear purchase recommendation for this cat house.

Dimensions: 67 x 53 x 43 (LxWxH)

Price:The price is absolutely reasonable at € 94.99 + shipping.

Kerbl rodent house apartment

A pretty nicely furnished stable with floors and areas of retreat. In addition, compared to the other guinea pig houses, it is reasonably solidly built. A big advantage is that it has a flap on the side so that an enclosure can be built on it without any manual skills.

Criticisms:

  • Litter bowls that are too low (makes mucking out more difficult), also occasionally jams.
  • very thin back wall (if necessary, replace with a board from the hardware store).
  • Additionally secure floors at the side!

Dimensions: 118 x 61 x 130 cm

Price: At € 159.00, the price is absolutely ok for the quality.

Rabbit hutch

I have this stall several times and in all of the stalls guinea pigs gnawed their way through in one night. It is made from extremely thin plywood. In addition, the bar is not marten-proof, which is why the guinea pig was taken out of the barn from acquaintances to be eaten by the marten. The metal drawer rusts after the first contact with urine (acid) and the whole stable is unstable, wobbly and absolutely short-lived. The roof softens and dissolves. The side walls are wafer-thin and are gnawed through. The floor space is too small even if it is attached to a large enclosure or if it is placed in a marten-proof enclosure. Every veterinary office will prohibit keeping in this stable.
This stall is not even worth its low price. You can only put it in an enclosure as a small shelter. Please do not buy for guinea pigs!
