The best free project management software is Casecamp


When several people get together on a project, they need different tools to coordinate their teamwork. These include, for example, tools for scheduling and time planning, for managing tasks or managing resources. Special project management software combines a more or less large number of these different tools in one solution. There is an abundance of such systems on the market, which are often web-based. They differ primarily in how broadly they cover the required functions. However, the basic function is the same for all of them: They offer a central platform on which the project members can come together and exchange ideas.

The free versions are usually very limited and can often only be used for one project. So if you regularly need project management software, you will not be able to avoid paying for it.

Basecamp 3

The best known tool for project management is Basecamp. Now available in version 3, it provides a rich set of functions and can be operated quite intuitively. With its features, the online solution focuses on communication within the team. At Basecamp, for example, there is the option of leaving messages on a message board or commenting on those of others. Files can also be exchanged in many different formats. Basecamp also offers versioning. The user can track the different versions of a file and create Gantt chart-like representations.

If you want to use Basecamp as a standard tool for project management, you can't avoid paying for the web-based tool. The two simple variants of the current version 3 - one for 29 dollars and one for 79 dollars a month - each offer 100 gigabytes of online storage and differ only in the "clientside" feature, which is only included in the more expensive variant. This means that internal communication and client communication can be carried out separately from one another.

In addition, there is an enterprise version available that offers 2 terabytes of storage, support for service level agreements to ensure availability, a personal account manager on the part of Basecamp and a one-hour live demo for all users - this variant costs at least $ 3,000 in Year.

Clocking IT

Users can work with Clocking IT completely free of charge. The solution is a web-based open source tool that is primarily aimed at software developers. To serve as a platform for their project work, Clocking IT provides a well-organized dashboard. Further project management functions such as time recording, task management or Gantt graphics are supported. Features that are not required can be deactivated by the user in order to keep the software clear.

Clocking IT also offers quite extensive collaboration options. These include, for example, a wiki in which the projects can be documented, as well as an instant messaging function.

Project teams can create notes and to-do lists, upload files and plans, and assign and manage tasks. In addition, the project progress can be communicated in chats with colleagues involved.   4. Projectplace
    “Projectplace” is one of the first professional PM solutions designed for the browser. The first release of the software was published in 1998. Since then, Projectplace has continued to evolve. Today it is presented in a modern flat design and comes up with an extensive feature set that covers all important aspects of successful project management. With high-quality apps and social collaboration functions, the tool also addresses the current requirements that are placed on modern productivity solutions today.

    The free, web-based project management tool "Clocking IT" is mainly aimed at software developers who want to manage their extensive projects efficiently.     “Trello” was started in 2011 and is offered by the software company Fog Creek Software from New York.     Just like most of its competitors, "Smartsheet" is web-based. Individual projects are created in so-called Smartsheets and the respective project team is added. All information pertaining to the project, such as communication between those involved in the project, file attachments and shared documents can then be quickly accessed via the respective Smartsheet.
