PRESS RELEASE8. June 2009
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - June 8, 2009 - Apple today announced the iPhone 3GS, the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet, packed with incredible new features including improved speed and performance - up to twice the speed of the iPhone 3G - extended battery life, a high-quality 3 megapixel camera with autofocus, an easy-to-use video recording function and a hands-free system for voice control. The iPhone 3GS comes with the new iPhone OS 3.0, the world's most advanced mobile operating system, with over 100 new functions such as 'cut, copy and paste'; 'MMS' *; Spotlight search, landscape keyboard and much more. With the iPhone 3GS, users have access to more than 50,000 applications from the revolutionary App Store, the world's largest store for applications, where customers have already downloaded over a billion programs. The iPhone 3GS offers twice the storage capacity with a 16 GB and a 32 GB model.
"The iPhone 3GS is the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet, and we believe people will love the new features like the auto focus camera, video recording and voice control," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.
The iPhone 3GS offers incredible speed and performance that is on average twice as fast as the iPhone 3G. As a result, websites build up faster and applications start faster. The iPhone 3GS uses the Open GL ES 2.0 standard for impressive high-resolution 3D graphics. This makes mobile use of games and other graphics-intensive programs better than ever before. The iPhone 3GS is not only faster, but with its longer battery life it also enables you to watch more videos, listen to more music, surf the Internet for longer or use your favorite applications for longer. The new iPhone 3GS also supports 7.2 Mbps HDSPA for a faster network connection. **
The iPhone 3GS comes with a new 3 megapixel camera with autofocus for exciting pictures and videos, which makes it even easier to capture the beautiful moments, edit them and share them with family and friends. The new autofocus camera adjusts the focus, exposure, color and contrast for the best possible image and has an automatic macro focus for special close-ups. With the new 'Tab to focus' function, you simply touch a desired object or area on the display and the camera automatically adjusts the focus and exposure. With one click on the start and stop points you can record wonderful high-resolution video clips and edit them directly on the iPhone 3GS. With the iPhone 3GS, you can send photos and videos via email and MMS, or publish them on MobileMe or YouTube, with one touch.
The voice control function of the iPhone 3GS enables hands-free operation of both the iPhone and the iPod functions. All you have to do is speak the appropriate instructions into the built-in microphone or headset microphone to dial by name or number. With the voice control you can play your favorite music based on the artist, album or playlist. The command 'Please play more songs like this' activates the Genius function. You can also tell the iPhone to pause the music, play the next track, activate shuffle mode or ask it 'What is currently being played?' (What's playing right now?).
The iPhone 3GS includes a new, built-in digital compass for immediate orientation. *** The compass app shows which path you are currently taking and turns as soon as you change the direction of travel. You can orientate yourself to geographic or magnetic north and the GPS integrated in the iPhone automatically shows the coordinates of the current position. The new built-in digital compass is also integrated in 'Maps', so it aligns each map to your own line of sight.
The iPhone 3GS offers new access functions, including VoiceOver, a screen reader that announces what appears on the iPhone 3GS display, making it possible for people with impaired vision to make calls, read e-mails, browse websites, play music and use applications to execute. The new universal zoom function enlarges the entire screen and the 'White on Black' feature inverts the colors of the display in order to offer a higher contrast to people with poor eyesight. The iPhone 3GS also offers the 'Mono Audio' function, which combines the left and right audio channels so that both tracks can be heard on both earphones at the same time, especially for those with hearing loss in one ear.
The iPhone 3GS comes with the new iPhone OS 3.0 software, which includes over 100 new functions, including: 'Cut, Copy and Paste', MMS, the Spotlight search, to cross iPhone or in 'Mail', in the 'Contacts' to search in 'Calendar' and iPod; Landscape keyboard for Mail, Messages, Notes and Safari; Extended parental controls for TV series, films and apps from the App Store; and the ability to create and send sound recordings while on the move using the new Voice Memo app The Phone 3.0 software also includes a new 'Find my iPhone' feature which, in collaboration with MobileMe, allows you to locate the iPhone on a map, send a message that appears on the screen, or play a sound to help to find the iPhone even when it is set to silent. If the iPhone cannot be found, it is possible to delete all data and content on the corresponding iPhone using the 'Remote Wipe' feature. New iTunes features available with iPhone 3.0 software include wireless download of movies, TV and audio programs, as well as iTunes U, so students can download their study materials on the go.
The iPhone 3GS gives its users access to the revolutionary App Store, the largest application store in the world with over 50,000 programs. Developers can reach millions and millions of iPhone and iPod touch users around the world through the App Store. To date, customers have downloaded more than 1 billion programs from the App Store. And with more than 1,000 new APIs (programming interfaces) in the iPhone SDK, developers can write even more innovative programs that use 'In-App Purchases', a new Maps API and 'Push Notifications'.
With the built-in Nike + iPod support, the iPhone 3GS becomes a perfect fitness companion. The optionally available Nike + iPod sensor (19 euros incl. VAT) is simply inserted into the Nike + shoe, which connects seamlessly with the iPhone 3GS and records the kilometers run or can be synchronized with the latest fitness equipment
