4 1 Framework 1.1 Basics The internship is a compulsory part of the training at the specialized school. It takes place in a profession that can be aspired to with the chosen subject. In the direction-specific lessons, you will learn subject-specific / occupational-specific aspects with regard to practical work experience, if possible. The internship enables you to combine what you have learned in school with practical application in everyday working life. 1.2 Internship You are looking for an internship yourself. The internship is usually completed in an institution or a company, but not with people who give grades in any way at the FMS or for the FMS or who are related to you. In exceptional cases, interns can also accompany individuals through their everyday work (e.g. freelance musicians, conductors, dancers, actors, photographers, journalists, etc.). The internship should give you a wide range of insights into everyday work in the respective professional field. Whenever possible, you should be actively involved and get to know the profession from behind the scenes. You can also choose internship locations outside of the region, but you have to arrange for external accommodation yourself. The school cannot cover any expenses. Insight into the world of work can also be gained in a foreign-language area if you have sufficient knowledge of the foreign language. As a rule, only one intern is planned at the respective internship location. The interns are not entitled to any remuneration. 1.3 Working hours and timing The internship comprises 10 working days and is based on the usual working hours per week for the industry. However, at least 35 hours per week must be worked. The two-week internship takes place in the last two weeks in January, i.e. in the second semester of the 2nd grade. If you want to extend the internship or want to have further internship experience at a second location, you have to make use of the time during the school holidays. 1.4 Illness / postponement / termination / catching up on the internship In the event of illness, accident or termination of the internship, the contact person at the internship location and the specialist teacher must be notified immediately by telephone. In the event of illness, a medical certificate must be submitted within 24 hours to the persons mentioned and the school management of the FMS. The school management decides whether the entire internship or just the days missed have to be made up for. As a rule, if there are two to four days missed, an official body must make up at least 50% of the missed days due to verifiable reasons. If more than four working days are missed, the working hours must be made up in full. In any case, internships outside of school hours (during the carnival or spring break) must be made up for. Anyone who for good reason is unable to complete the job-related internship at the scheduled time for a period of two weeks must have completed the internship with the internship report no later than one month before graduation at the end of the 2nd grade

5 1.5 Assessment A completed internship and a completed internship report are prerequisites for promotion to the 3rd class (Doctoral Degree Ordinance FMS Basel-Stadt, 2, Paragraphs 2 and 12, Paragraph 3). Pupils who meet both conditions receive the grade fulfilled in the certificate of the 2nd class, 2nd semester, for the job-related internship. This rating is also listed in the technical secondary school certificate and later in the specialist school-leaving certificate. Pupils who do not complete the internship or who do not successfully complete the internship and / or who do not meet the criteria for the grade fulfilled for the internship report will receive the entry not fulfilled in the certificate for the internship and the note not promoted. The involvement in the workplace is assessed by the internship support. If the internship is assessed as not having been completed after the two weeks, it must be made up for and completed within the vacation period before the end of the 2nd class (carnival and / or spring vacation). The supervisor evaluates your internship report according to the criteria in Chapter Reports submitted late are evaluated as not fulfilled. Anyone who cannot meet the deadline for good reason must provide the supervisory teacher with official evidence (e.g. medical certificate) before or at the latest 24 hours after the deadline. Any associated extension of the submission deadline will be agreed with the supervisor. If an internship report is not rated as fulfilled, the internship report must be corrected within two school weeks of the announcement of the evaluation in order to complete the internship in the 2nd grade. The internship report can only be improved once. Pupils who repeat the 2nd grade in the same subject and who have successfully completed the internship and the report in the previous year do not have to repeat the two-week internship related to the profession. However, if you decide to have a second work experience in January 2nd grade, you have to complete the new internship with an internship report again. 2 Planning, procedure 2.1 Orientation At an information event at the beginning of the new school year, the departmental representatives will give you detailed information about the internship. There is an exchange about professions, institutions and companies belonging to the professional field, and framework conditions, objectives and procedures are discussed. An overview of the occupational field of the respective subject area can be found under: Individual search for the internship You can find out detailed information about the tasks and conditions of the professions in your subject area in which you are interested. You will find addresses and make contacts to clarify whether you can do an internship there. An initial request is usually made orally / by telephone, by email or in the form of a short letter of application. A complete, error-free application dossier (letter of motivation, curriculum vitae with photo) is then sent to the internship location. You will inform yourself thoroughly about the institution / company in which you will be able to interview and prepare relevant questions. You arrange an interview in order to get to know the place of the internship and to make the necessary clarifications with the contact person about working hours, scope of work, working conditions, regulations / specifications (clothing, data protection, aids) and areas of responsibility

6 So that the institution / employer is informed about the official nature and objectives of the internship, give the contact person orientation letter 1 (see appendix). You know its content and can provide information if you have any questions. 2.3 Agreement with the internship support, approval In autumn, the employer or the contact person of the institution (internship support) confirms the acceptance for the internship by signing the corresponding agreement form (see appendix) and recognizes the obligations towards the Fachmaturitätsschule Basel. The agreements must be submitted to the secretariat. The school management approves the internship. The school management informs the institution / employer about the next steps at least three weeks before the start of the internship. If an agreement cannot be entered into, the school management will justify the rejection to the internship, the pupil and the supervisor. When looking for an internship again, the pupil is given the best possible support. 2.4 Before starting the internship, you will find out about the institution / company (areas of responsibility, production, specialty areas, personal situation, structure, etc.). They make sure that you know when and where exactly the internship starts for you on the first day. You research the occupation (s) into which you will have insight (see and homepages of the training institutions). They clarify: o which training is necessary o where it is offered o which requirements will be placed on future students and professionals o in which areas / areas of responsibility you could work with this training o what further training opportunities exist o which related professions exist Use on everyone Case multiple sources! Record the sources used in the list of sources according to the following pattern: Internet sources: e.g. (accessed on the date) Books, Articles: Author (family name, first name): Title of the book, of the article. Place of publication, year of publication. E.g. Muster, Hans: Vocational training in Switzerland. Zurich, 2015 You prepare your internship report (chapter structure, layout, chapter on your research on your profession, etc.). 2.5 When you start your internship, you will be at the agreed location in good time. You introduce yourself to the management and the employees. You are aware of the importance of the first impression; you are friendly, helpful and interested

7 2.6 During the internship You will act in accordance with the information provided by the contact person / practice support and deal with them in a respectful manner. You try to identify yourself with the professional activity (central idea, order, product of the institution / company as well as with the situation for the staff and customers). You will find out how you get information and how your actions affect yourself and others. You are committed to the area assigned to you. You record the daily impressions of your internship location. Describe activities, incidents with people, situations on site and write a short overall impression for each day according to the instructions of the teacher responsible for you (see p. 10, chapter 4.3 Daily protocol). Note down key experiences or Key situations: Situations that show particularly well what was central to your internship or that illustrate a certain aspect of the job in a particularly precise manner, situations that particularly impressed you. Explain why this situation or experience was particularly impressive for you. Gather material for the preparation of your report by collecting reports / documentation as well as taking notes, photos and / or sketches. If difficulties arise during the internship which you cannot solve with the internship support, you must first contact the supervisor or, in emergencies, inform the school management of the FMS. 2.7 Completion of the internship At the end of the internship, prepare for feedback, taking both positive and negative into account. You tidy up your workplace and / or the material and put together the documents that will be important for the preparation of your internship report. You say goodbye to the people with whom you came into regular contact during the internship. 3 Supervision 3.1 Preparation, counseling, evaluation at the FMS During the preparation time for the internship you will be accompanied by a supervisor. If possible, the supervisor will advise you on the search for internship positions. She is your contact person in the event of ambiguities, discrepancies or changed situations before or during the internship. She receives your internship report and evaluates it. 3.2 Internship support at the internship location Your internship support usually signed the agreement for the internship. It should enable you to have a structured course of the internship and familiarize you with activities that are related to skills and competencies typical of the profession. The internship support will evaluate your internship with the grade fulfilled or not fulfilled. Upon request, a copy of the internship report can be submitted to the internship support in April
