What experiences have people had with weeds?
Kill weeds: 10 alternatives to unhealthy weed killer
When the laboriously planted plants finally bloom and you could actually enjoy the reward for gardening, a new troublemaker appears: the weeds. Shepherd's purse, thistle and Co. are up to mischief among flowers and shrubs at every nook and cranny. Get rid of pesky weeds with these tips.
Nettle, ground elder and dandelion can also be very useful as medicinal herbs, but hardly anyone wants to see them in their beds. The annoying wild herbs rob the flowers planted there of water, nutrients and light and thus slow down their growth. In the worst case, the vigorous plants spread so far that they completely displace other species.
• Lay out a weed control fabric before you build a terrace, path or bed, for example.
• Put ground cover plants. They take away the light from weeds.
• Loosen the soil regularly with a hoe. It prevents the weeds from germinating.
• Pour boiling water over wild plants.
• Remove the inflorescences.
• Remove the roots when weeding on slightly damp days.
The best anti-weed technology is also the most environmentally friendly: weeding. This is particularly easy after the rain, when the ground is soft. Then you can pull out many plants even without tools. If the soil is dry, you should work with a garden claw. This makes it easy to loosen up the earth and then simply remove the weeds.
Do not dispose of weeds on the compost. Otherwise, spread the weeds in the garden again when applying the natural fertilizer.
Weed killers are controversial
If weeding is too strenuous or certain plants keep coming back despite being removed several times, the chemical club is the obvious choice. However, the use of such herbicides for private use is prohibited, as weed killers are also dangerous for humans, animals and other plants. Therefore, it is better to resort to harmless biological means. That protects the environment and health. Another disadvantage of weed killers is that they only work for a short time. Annual wild plants are killed immediately. However, perennials sprout again in the following year. The chemicals must therefore be used regularly.
If, despite your best efforts, you cannot avoid using a chemical agent, it is best to apply the agent directly to the plant. In this way, the herbicide works specifically against the unwanted crop. It is also important that you pay attention to both the weather and the time: the temperature should not be below ten degrees or above 25 degrees Celsius. It should be calm and dry - both factors would ensure that the weed killer is distributed in the garden and therefore does not work selectively. Strong sunlight can also have a very negative effect on the effects of the chemicals.
Always wear protective clothing such as gloves, a breathing mask and eye protection when carrying the weed killer.
Home remedies for wild weeds
Salt and vinegar
Many people swear by salt and vinegar as herbicides. But you should keep your hands off that, because the use of these home remedies for this purpose is prohibited by law. Vinegar and salt are officially not permitted pesticides. The reason for this is that the concentration of the substances in the soil is very high and cannot be broken down within an acceptable period of time. Soil, plants and insects would be permanently polluted by the aggressive essences.
In addition, the two home remedies negatively affect the pH of your soil. As a result, your plants can die because the earth is too acidic, for example.
Another home remedy is unsalted potato water. Pasta and rice water have the same effect. The cooking water contains a lot of starch, which clogs the pores of the plants. In addition, the heat damages the plants. The plants die.
Pour the hot cooking water over the unwanted plants. It is best to use this trick multiple times or at least regularly.
Like the cooking water in pasta, rice or potatoes, baking soda clogs the pores of the plant. For the home remedy for weeds, mix three packets of the leavening agent with about five liters of water. Pour the mixture over the affected area. For the remedy to work, you should repeat this process regularly.
Stinging nettle manure
Nettle manure is not just a good fertilizer and pest killer. It is also very suitable for weed killing.
Put one kilogram of fresh nettle or 200 grams of dried nettle with ten liters of water in a large bucket. Now the mixture has to ferment for several days. It is important that the container is covered and that you stir everything twice a day to begin with. If no foam or bubbles are visible when stirring, you can use the liquid manure. To kill weeds, the mixture is diluted in a ratio of about 1:10 and only poured onto the unwanted plants. Since this agent is very aggressive, it could harm other plants. Therefore caution is advised. Repeat the process at least once a day.

Kill weeds with boiling water
It also works without additives: Boiling water is an effective remedy against weeds. Simply pour over the plants, then let them dry and remove the plant remains. Scalding destroys the sensitive organism of the plant.
Remove weeds mechanically
To prevent the weeds from spreading further, it is important to remove the flowers early on. If you don't have time to weed, you should at least cut off the flower heads of dandelions and Co. so that the seeds cannot develop in the first place.
Grout scraper and flame device
Weeds can be easily removed from the cracks between paving stones with a joint scraper or knife. Flaming the paneled floor is also quite effective. However, you should only use this if the floor slabs can withstand the high temperatures. For example, some natural stone slabs are too sensitive. In this case, you should aim to remove the weeds with the help of fire.

Anyone who regularly sweeps the path and terrace with a street sweeper (hard bristles) can easily remove fresh offspring. The best time to do this is when it has been dry for some time and the wild plants have already dried out slightly. Then you need less strength.
Another useful weapon in the fight against perennial weeds is the tap root pricker. This tool is used to puncture close to the plant - for example with a dandelion - shaking up the earth a bit and then removing the plant and roots without any problems. Otherwise, you just tear them off, so that the wild herb is inevitable again.
There are various preventive options to prevent weeds from growing in the first place. Anyone who creates a new bed can, for example, put on a weed fleece and then apply fresh soil. This inhibits the growth of wild herbs and keeps the moisture in the soil better. A layer of mulch or straw as the top layer also inhibits weed growth. The bed also looks more neat. However, since mulch removes nutrients from the soil for decomposition, it has to be fertilized more often after it has been introduced.
When nothing works anymore
If the weeds have become so prevalent in the garden, a complete replanting could help. To do this, however, all plants on the chosen area must be destroyed. This is very easy: mow or cut everything very quickly. Now lay several layers of thick, untreated cardboard on the surface. Light should no longer be able to penetrate. In this way, all plants under the cover are deprived of their livelihood.
The cover should remain in place for several weeks, sometimes even months, and not be lifted. You can also wait until the cardboard has rotted and also regularly add compost to the area. Both serve as a good basis for the new planting.
Weeds as pointer plants
You can also use wild herbs for soil analysis.
- Is the bottom too angry, common bunny clover grow.
- At a high nitrogen content nettles and groundgrass grow very well.
- Field Schachtelheim, dock and meadowfoam can be used Waterlogging indicate.
- If, on the other hand, more summer Adonis, Milttler plantain or dyer's chamomile grow, that is Floor toodry, so very sandy.
- On one compacted soil common plantain, couch grass and goose weed grow frequently.
Wild herbs as eye-catchers and medicinal plants
Not every weed is a weed, many plants are often misunderstood despite their positive properties. It is understandable that, for example, you don't want nettles next to tulips and primroses. But maybe you can assign the medicinal herb a different place in the garden, because when brewed as a tea, nettle helps wonderfully with stomach and intestinal catarrhs and is widely known for its blood-purifying effect.
Keep the herb patch clean
If you dig in a foil around the weed area - about 50 centimeters deep, the plants will not spread so easily in the rest of the garden. Many other "Un" herbs are also suitable for tea infusions or poultices and even bring happy splashes of color into your bed. They are important components in nature's ecosystem. Pests, for example, collect on them, which in turn are essential for beneficial insects as a source of food and they form a necessary habitat for them - for butterflies, for example.
