What is active noise suppression

AirPods Pro and AirPods Max: Active noise cancellation and transparency mode

AirPods Pro and AirPods Max have three different noise control modes: Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency Mode, and Off. Switch between them depending on how much you want to hear from your surroundings.

What are active noise cancellation and transparency mode?

With active noise cancellation, an outward-facing microphone or microphones detect external noises that your AirPods Pro or AirPods Max neutralize with anti-noise before you perceive the noises. An inward-facing microphone listens in your ear for unwanted internal noises, which are also neutralized by the AirPods Pro or AirPods Max through anti-noise.

The transparency mode allows outside noise so you can hear what is happening around you. Active noise cancellation and transparency mode work best when your AirPods Pro are seated well.

Switch between sound control modes

You can either switch between the noise control modes directly from your AirPods Pro or AirPods Max, or you can use your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or Mac to do this. You will hear a beep when you switch between modes.

To switch between noise control modes on iOS, iPadOS, watchOS or macOS, select "Noise Cancellation" for active noise cancellation.

AirPods Max

With your AirPods Max on, press the Noise Control button to toggle between active noise cancellation and transparency mode. In the settings you can adjust which modes should be switched between ("Active Noise Suppression", "Transparency Mode" and "Off").

AirPods Pro

Press and hold the pressure sensor on the handle of an AirPod until you hear a beep.

If you're wearing both AirPods, press and hold the pressure sensor on either AirPods to switch between active noise cancellation and transparency mode. In the settings you can adjust which modes should be switched between ("Active Noise Suppression", "Transparency Mode" and "Off").

To use active noise cancellation on only one AirPod, go to Settings> Accessibility on an iPhone or iPad, then turn on Noise Cancellation With An AirPod. Then press and hold the pressure sensor to toggle between Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency Mode and Off.
