The best measures against creaking doors

Squeaky doors are extremely uncomfortable. You can counter this with simple measures. You can find out which these are and why home remedies should not be used here.

Squeaking doors are an imposition for all residents in the long run. Because doors are opened and closed again several times a day and accordingly have to endure a lot. If you are particularly sensitive to the unpleasant noise, you will quickly lose your nerve. You can put an end to the squeaking with just a few measures.

Oil the hinges of squeaky doors

The most common reason for a squeaky door is the hinges. To be able to edit this, you should lift the door off its hinges and put it to one side. Before the mandrel can be oiled, it is advisable to clean it thoroughly. To do this, vacuum the hinges with a vacuum cleaner and then clean them with a cloth. Avoid blowing out the dirt, as this way the dust is more likely to be pushed into the corners.

If it is an external door, i.e. the front door, chemical rust remover should also be applied. After all, rust also makes doors squeak over time.

To oil the fishing rods, it is best to use bicycle oil or sewing machine oil, as these do not dry out easily. Graphite grease and engine oil are also occasionally used. Put a few drops of the oil on a rag and fish it all around the fishing rod. Doors that cannot be removed can be treated with a so-called penetrating oil. This is simply sprayed onto the hinge.

If your house has very old doors, the hinges may have oil holes. Just dribble some oil into it and the squeak should be gone. Nevertheless, the door should also be cleaned regularly here.

Better to avoid home remedies for squeaky doors

Well-known home remedies such as wax, hairspray, cooking oil, butter or petroleum jelly are often used to lubricate doors. Even if the means mentioned interrupt the squeaking for a short time, these are not permanent solutions. With hairspray, the sound comes back very soon, petroleum jelly creates a thick, black paste on the hinge, and cooking oil and butter create an unpleasant odor in the house. So if you want to eliminate squeaking in the long run, you should refrain from home remedies and opt for the remedies already mentioned, such as bicycle oil.

Maintain doors regularly

Even new doors can start to squeak over time. However, in order for these to remain intact for as long as possible, a few tips must be observed. In addition to regularly cleaning the hinges, the door should also not be subjected to excessive stress. For example, avoid slamming the door hard - a doorstop can be helpful here.

What to do if the door is stuck

Squeaky doors are handled quickly. But what should you do if the door is stuck? The reason for this is usually the door leaf, which no longer sits properly in the frame. In this case, try to readjust the door by turning the hinges on the door leaf and frame in and out. Occasionally, too thick a layer of varnish is the reason for clamping. It is best to sand off the varnish and then just paint over the area thinly.
