What should I wash my face with?

How to clean your facial skin properly

If you wash your face every day, can you remove skin irritations and blemishes? Not quite, because the perfect facial cleansing is tailored to the skin type. Too much care can also damage the skin. Cosmetic washing instructions.

Facial cleansing is often underestimated. Daily washing of the face is at least as important for the health and radiance of the skin as the subsequent creaming, especially for women who like to apply make-up.

Facial cleansing frees the skin from the film of fat, care residues, make-up and environmental pollution that accumulate on the skin and in the pores over the course of the day and thus prevent the cells from breathing and regenerating. Not only blackheads and pimples, but also premature skin aging is the unsightly consequence of clogged pores. But simply incorrect cleaning can also cause the skin to become inflamed and reddened.

Facial cleansing: how often do you wash?

The Facial cleansing should therefore not be neglected as the basis of care. Which, by the way, does not mean that you should overdo it with your face wash. If you remove too much sebum from the skin through aggressive or frequent facial cleansing, you dry out the horny layer unnecessarily and make it susceptible to wrinkles, but also to the penetration of germs and bacteria. Therefore: two cleanings per day (morning and evening) and one weekly intensive cleansing (e.g. with peelings or cleansing masks) are sufficient for normal skin. If you tend to have oily skin, you can't go wrong with two to three weekly facial peelings.

Tip for normal and dry skin: The use of cleansing gels and lotions is only required for dry and normal skin in the evening so as not to degrease the skin additionally. After all, the skin doesn't get dirty overnight. A refreshing wash cycle with clear, lukewarm water is sufficient in the morning.

Better short and cool than long and hot

In order to cleanse the skin without washing it dry, it is recommended at the Facial cleansing always work with mild or cool water temperatures. The warmer the water, the greater the drying effect. It is also not advisable to use a wash area that is too long (not only when cleaning the face, but especially when showering or bathing). The longer the contact with water, the more fat is removed from the skin.

Foam, cream or soap? The best products for facial cleansing

Which products to use when cleansing your face depends on your skin type.

Basically: The drier the skinthe creamier the cleaning products should be so that they can have a moisturizing effect. By the way: Rich, creamy cleansers, such as cleansing milk, cleansing oil or a cleansing lotion, are always applied to dry skin, massaged in briefly and then removed with a splash of water or a damp cloth. Cleansing gels or face tonic with alcohol are not suitable for dry or sensitive facial skin, they also dry out the skin and can tend to cause redness and irritation. Care should always be taken to ensure that facial cleansing products have a neutral pH value.

Who to oily skin and skin shine tends, however, is usually well served with antibacterial and alcohol-based cleansing gels and facial toner. It is always a good sign if the product foams on the skin together with water. Therefore, a cleansing foam with mattifying ingredients is of course also suitable for cleansing the face of oily skin. Oily skin types are also doing themselves a favor when the pH value is neutral.

Combination skin has a mixed complexion. T-zones on the forehead, nose and chin are rather greasy and therefore need to be freed from fat, while the dry areas of the face (cheeks and eyes) need additional fat. For combination skin and oily skin, cleansing gels are particularly suitable as a good compromise if only one product is to be used. They donate moisture without being greasy. Products that tend to remove moisture, such as facial tonic and facial peeling and have a mattifying and cleansing effect, should only be applied specifically to the T-zone.

Sensitive or sensitive skin wants to be cleaned gently, which is why cleansing milk or gel with soothing essences without alcohol, perfume and with a neutral pH value are particularly in demand.

Make-up removal and eye care

The eyes put at the Facial cleansing A challenge in two respects. On the one hand, the skin around the eyes has only a few sebum glands and is therefore drier and more sensitive anyway. On the other hand, the eyes are often made up with extra long-lasting eyeliners and mascara, so that intensive cleaning and make-up removal is necessary. In order not to irritate this sensitive skin area, facial cleansing is carried out in two steps. First, you dissolve waterproof makeup residues with pure oil (e.g. baby oil, olive oil). The oil layer is then washed with a mild cleaning concentrate. Special two-phase products conveniently combine both steps in one product. If you tend to have particularly sensitive facial skin, you should avoid using make-up removal products that contain oil.

Drying without drying out

The Facial cleansing ends with drying the face. Anyone who tends to have sensitive or dry skin should also exercise particular caution here. Rough drying and rough towels can unnecessarily irritate sensitive skin. If you want to be sure not to damage the skin, just dab it gently instead of rubbing it with a towel. Alternatively, you can put a paper towel on the wet skin, which gently absorbs the moisture.
