How is the user interface like or different from the user interface

Windows 10 The problem with the user interface

Under the surface - the user interface - the Microsoft world has been in order for some time now as never before. Since Windows 8, the same operating system kernel has been running on high-performance servers, PCs, smartphones, tablets and game consoles.

"Microsoft has served a lot of operating system cores for a long time. And integrating that into a good, sensible, established one makes total sense," says Professor Uwe Baumgarten from the Technical University of Munich. The company has its problems with the user interface. Windows 8 for PCs looks like the touch screen of a phone. And what used to be the central start menu is more or less a dummy. That should be different with the next generation of operating systems. It is called Windows 10 across all platforms, has the same kernel, but different interfaces adapted to the respective device type.

Better suited for convertibles

The most important person at the presentation this Wednesday was Joe Belfiore, Microsoft's vice president of design and user interface. He showed program windows on the PC, tiles on the tablet and how the one is transformed into the other during operation - with so-called convertibles, computers that can be operated with swiping movements as well as with keyboard and mouse. Translated continuum, Microsoft calls this function.

"Continuum makes it possible to elegantly transform a hybrid computer that I use as a laptop into a tablet. When I remove the mouse and keyboard, a message window asks whether I want to switch to tablet mode. And when I choose that, the windows take up the whole screen. I can use the device like a tablet. When I'm done, I click the keyboard back on, get a command prompt, and I'm back. "

So actually not a big deal, but important. Each device gets the user interface that the user is used to. And if it's an electronic chimera like a convertible, then there are two.

Programming interfaces for holograms

"That's what it's about: A device like this switches elegantly from one mode to the other without the user interface confusing people."

It should be possible to conveniently synchronize data between the various Windows devices. The PC version will get an Xbox app and games will in future be able to be streamed from the Xbox to the PC. The rest of the announcements were about high-tech gimmicks.

Cortana, the speaking personal assistant, comes with Windows 10 on the PC and programming interfaces for holograms are built in. The group also presented suitable augmented reality glasses at the same time. And finally, Windows will be offered as a service in the future - a-a-S - as a service, says the group boss Satya Nadella:

"That means Windows as a Service: Customers get constant innovations and not only that, but also the certainty that their Windows devices are safe and reliable."

This probably means that new functions will in future be distributed preferably as updates instead of as part of an independent operating system version that has to be reinstalled. As a service, users of Windows 8.1 and Phone 8.1 also get the new operating system free of charge for one year. And also the users of Windows 7. Because they are crucial for Microsoft, professionals who threaten to go off the peg. This is why the success of Windows 10 is of existential importance for Microsoft.

"Well, I do think that it is extremely important because it simply needs a successor that captures the commercial users, the professional users, so that they have a stable, reliable system with the applications that one is used to and which one is used to with the user interface, which runs properly and sensibly again. "
