League of Legends reports do it all

League of Legends

Game description:
The competitive online game available for download free of charge League of Legends was founded in 2009 by Riot Games released. Already at the end of 2011 it had over 32 million active players worldwide and is currently one of the best known and most successful games with over 111 million players (as of 2018). The game is often referred to as MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) and combines elements Real-time strategy games (RTS) and role-playing games (RPG), which is why strategic action and agreements with other team members are increasingly required as the level of play increases

Although there are different game modes (here for the article about the mode Teamfight Tactics) there are usually two teams, each consisting of five different champions (heroes) with an individual design, play style and skills, compete against each other. The game ends can choose the heroes themselves, depending on the game mode, or they are assigned randomly. The design of the heroes available to the players ranges from people to those who can also transform into animal beings to mythical creatures and animals as well as other imaginative characters.

The goal in the most common mode (5 versus 5) is to use tactics and targeted consultation with your own team to destroy the opposing nexus, the main element of the base, and, at the same time, to protect your own nexus. The teams are supported by turrets and vassals who fight alongside the heroes and prevent an early game decision.

The game world is designed like a comic and the players have a bird's eye view of the action. The structure of the map is visible to the players through the "fog of the warrior", but areas in which the players cannot see are black and covered by fog. but can also be obtained for a certain period of time by placing “eyes.” At the beginning of the game, each hero is at level 1 and can rise to level 18. The champion becomes stronger and stronger and gets both automatically in the course of the game, but also through killing or support gold, which can be spent on equipment etc. The heroes have different abilities that can be activated, used and improved tactically in the course of the game.

If both teams are very even, a game can last up to three hours without a break. But there are also game games that end after 15 minutes when a team surrenders. As a rule, you should plan between 20 and 45 minutes.

Above all, tactical skills and the willingness to cooperate with other players are required.

Pedagogical assessment:
The rise to the mighty summoner
At the end of each game, the players receive a certain amount of experience points with which they can advance to higher summoner levels. This enables special abilities ("spells") to be unlocked, two of which can be chosen in each game. The players also receive a certain amount of blue essences with which they can permanently unlock champions or rune pages. The runes belonging to the latter also had to be purchased in the past, but are now free of charge. Runes can be equipped at will before each game and grant the players improvements or new skills in the game. In order to collect enough blue essences and to be able to afford champions or rune pages, you have to play for a long time. Otherwise, 14 of the 145 different heroes (as of October 2019) are available free of charge every week. The champions are constantly being expanded, with a new one appearing roughly every three months. Another way to permanently unlock a champion or buy other goods is through the use of money.

The use of money
League of Legends
itself is available for download free of charge and is therefore one of the free2play offers. However, there is the option of buying the in-game currency Riot Points with money. This allows players to purchase various cosmetic changes for champions (so-called skins) or other accessories (such as eye skins, symbols or stickers), but also champions. A champion costs between 260 and 975 Riot Points, which corresponds to € 2 to € 7.50. The price ranges for skins vary a lot more: they cost between 390 and 3250 Riot Points (€ 3-23). There is also the option of buying other items, such as so-called boosts. As a result, the players receive more experience points per game for a certain period of time and can thus advance faster and become more powerful. However, the boosts only speed up the experience points of the summoner level and have no effect on how quickly the champions in the game reach a higher level. All the more to consider in this context are loot boxes in which the players buy chests for money containing random (mostly cosmetic) items. These can quickly lead to the fact that the players expect more luck from the next chest and thus get into a cycle in which they want to acquire and open more and more chests.

Most of the youngsters in the play tester group have already spent money on the game. They found the purchase price for a champion to be justified because the actual game is free. Parents in particular should be aware of the possibility of using money, as children and young people who play this game more often will very likely want to invest money at some point. With the young group of playtesters, there was almost a kind of competition as to who had the most unlocked champions or skins. In this regard, it can help parents and gamers, for example, to agree a monthly budget for in-game purchases together.

Tactical skill
The game can be played alone or with friends at the same time in a team. A scoring system ensures that the players always compete against summoners of about the same strength and that they are not demotivated by opponents that are too strong. On the user interface of League of Legends there is the possibility to save other game ends as friends and to chat with them. Tactical skills are required to win in the game. The players have to act together as a team and coordinate with each other. The youngsters' playtesters usually communicated with each other via Skype from home. Since the teams only find out which heroes they are playing against shortly before the start of the respective game, League of Legends remains interesting even after long games and exerts a certain fascination on the players. The youngsters from the play tester group designed extra tactics to win as often as possible.

Prove yourself competitively
The ranked games are also in League of Legends an opportunity to prove yourself competitively against others. For many players, rank is seen as a status symbol. If the relaxed game with friends is not enough for gamers, it is also possible to try the League of Legends eSports, which currently has the largest scene worldwide (as of 2019). For example, the World Cup takes place every year, in which professional teams play for millions in profits, but many universities have now also joined the Uniliga, where teams of students can play against each other.

Sportsmanship is rewarded
The honor system introduced in 2018 is intended to encourage players to behave honorably in order to lead to a more pleasant gaming community and experience in the long term. After every game, the players can honor a teammate in one of three categories if he or she has made a good impression and behaved in an exemplary manner regardless of victory or defeat. The categories roughly relate to whether the players reacted calmly even when there was knockdowns or mistakes, helped to victory through particularly sophisticated tactics or were friendly and demonstrated team spirit. If players are honored frequently, they move up in the honor system, for which they in turn receive rewards. This can include skins that can otherwise only be bought, but also frames for the profile and the loading screen, in order to be able to show other players their own honor level.

Conclusion:
League of Legends is particularly popular with young people. The entry into the game is kept quite simple and promises a lot of fun for the players. Although the game is a free2play offer, according to the young testers, the need to spend money is very high. Therefore, the game should only be played by players who are able to deal with the use of money in a reflective way.
