What common characteristics do all engineers have?
Architect and engineer
Architects and engineers - the small difference
If you are looking for competent support as a building owner during a renovation, the different job titles often cause confusion. There are architects, but there are also civil engineers, graduate engineers for structural engineering or building technicians. All of them offer the same service, namely the support of the renovation from the first planning to the final acceptance. The differences between the individual occupational groups lie in their training.
There are several ways to become an architect. The classic one is a university degree. A distinction is made between university studies and university studies. Architects who have been working for a long time have often also completed a degree at a university of applied sciences. The content of the training encompasses the technical and legal as well as the artistic aspect of the job. The architect is trained as an all-rounder: He can design freely, but also create implementation plans for the construction company. The building laws and the basics of statics are also part of the training content, such as cost planning, construction supervision, property management and project management.
A good architect is an artist and a businessman or woman rolled into one and has at least a solid basic knowledge of all areas of construction. This enables him to plan realistic buildings that are, on the one hand, homely and aesthetically pleasing, but on the other hand, affordable and realistically realizable. This knowledge is particularly important in the field of renovation, as existing structures and their statics are used when building in existing buildings. A degree alone is not enough to qualify as an architect. At least two years of professional experience and registration in the state's chamber of architects are required.

The civil engineer
During their studies, civil engineers learn everything important about structural engineering as well as building materials and material properties. The content also includes the areas of the construction industry. Knowing about this ensures that a building can safely withstand its own weight as well as the forces acting on it. Civil engineers work in building construction, but this professional group can also be found in road construction and civil engineering and often as planners for house renovations. The field of natural sciences and mathematics play a major role in the course; building materials, connections and fastenings are also dealt with intensively.
Hardly any subject in the course is art, the civil engineer concentrates on the technical aspects of a building. This professional group often creates the static calculations for a building on the basis of the architect's draft planning and checks whether and how the planning ideas can be implemented. As a partner in a renovation, a civil engineer is an excellent partner with regard to the stability of the renovations, but this professional group often thinks too pragmatically and neglects important points such as quality of living, the comfortable climate and comfort. Civil engineers can often be found in construction supervision due to their technical knowledge.

The engineer for structural engineering
If you find the title Ing. (FH) Hochbau or a similar designation on the business card, then this can mean different training courses. A Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Studied architecture at a university of applied sciences, but has not been entered on the list of architects in his chamber. Engineering offices are often run by civil engineers, planning offices consist of one or the other professional group or a healthy mixture of different skills.
The specialist planners
In addition to the architect or civil engineer who takes on the overall planning and coordinates the building project, there are also specialist planners on board. These deal, for example, with electrics, heating systems or security technology. In the case of smaller renovations, the architect usually takes on these planning tasks; specialist planners are usually involved in large or very complicated projects and cost extra.
All divisions share the billing according to the rules of the HOAI (fee schedule for architects and engineers) in which the individual tasks are divided into service phases and can be billed according to certain fee rates.
