Is marijuana haram?

Answered by Muftī Muhammad ibn Adam

Question: Is marijuana haram?

Answer: Drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, opium etc. are all prohibited because of their many harmful side effects (ḥarām).

Marijuana is a psychoactive drug made from the leaves of the cannabis plant. It is usually smoked, but it can also be eaten. It is the most widely used drug and is widely regarded as a "soft" drug.

Marijuana intoxicates a person in the same way as alcohol does. It weakens the senses and the ability to think. Scientific studies have shown that marijuana causes a variety of harms and can lead to addiction to other, harsh drugs.

The Messenger of Allaah, Allaah bless him and give him salvation, said: "Any drug that is intoxicating is forbidden." (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Buḫārī, No. 4088)

And he, Allah bless him and give him salvation, also said: "Anything that is intoxicating in large quantities is prohibited even in small quantities." (Abu Dāwūd, At-Tirmiḏī, Ibn Māǧa and others with a solid chain of narrations)

There is therefore no reason to doubt the ban on these modern narcotics such as cocaine, heroin etc. or such “soft drugs” that are offered at parties and in clubs, where unfortunately Muslim young people can also be found.

All drugs are haram for the reason that they intoxicate a person in one way or another.

It deprives one of the ability to think clearly and properly - and that is exactly what numbness is. Please seek advice from a scholar in your area.

And Allah knows best!
