Did Keith Richards ever meet Elvis

The improvement in the health of Elvis' accompanist Myrna Smith from "Sweet Inspirations" was unfortunately short-lived. A long-time Elvis fan and member of the Danish fan club "Elvis Unlimited" named Carole Drexler visited Myrna Smith in California the day before yesterday and met the once wonderfully dynamic soul singer in a clinic. Myrna is suffering from severe kidney problems worse than before and is on constant dialysis treatment that has left her very debilitated, making a return to the scene a long way off. Carole Drexler is convinced that the sympathy and encouragement of fans from all over the world would help Myrna a lot and give her strength and confidence, which is why she, together with "Elvis Unlimited", initiated a corresponding call for help under the slogan "Myrna Needs Us" to all fans . Fans of Elvis and the Sweet Inspirations are warmly invited to write to Myrna and encourage her. Please send letters to the following address: Myrna Smith, Canyon Oaks Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, 22029 Saticoy Street, Canoga Park, California 91303, USA. The entire team of "The King’s World" joins the call of our Danish friends and hopes for strong, helpful support from many Elvis fans from German-speaking countries. At the same time, we wholeheartedly wish Myrna Smith a speedy and speedy recovery!

In May 2010, the publishing house "KJ Consulting" began with the publication of a new series of books about Elvis, the dimensions of which are supposed to be bigger than anything that has ever been printed about the King before. The Norwegian author Erik Lorentzen wants to document the life and career of Elvis with a total of six super books in an unprecedented way. The fans reacted with astonishment to the fact that Lorentzen and the publishing house started with Volume 3 of the series, which depicts the years from 1960 to 1964, and promptly asked how and when it would continue after that (see our reports from May 7th and May 15, 2010). It has now become known that volume 2 of "The Elvis Files" will follow as the second volume in October 2010, covering the years from 1957 to 1959. This book will also contain several hundred pages and well over 1000 photos and will be published as a high-quality hardcover book.

In the 1962 feature film “Kid Galahad”, Elvis played the singing boxer Walter Gulick, who at the end of the film had to face the champion Ramon “Sugarboy” Romero in a big showdown and won the fight sensationally. The role of the corrupt Romero in "Kid Galahad" was played by Ray de la Fuente, who was also a boxer in 'real' life and was occasionally placed in relevant films by his father, who worked as a consultant on boxing issues in Hollywood. Now Ray de la Fuente has been inducted into the "California Boxing Hall Of Fame", which naturally made him look forward to his old days and insisted on remembering his guest appearance on "Kid Galahad" alongside Elvis. "Kid Galahad", produced by United Artists under the direction of Phil Carlson, was the tenth Elvis film to hit theaters in July 1962 and was another great success.

As announced, the annual "Crossroads Guitar Festival" by guitar legend Eric Clapton took place last Saturday, June 26th 2010, in Toyota Park in Chicago / Illinois, at which Elvis' long-time lead guitarist James Burton was a guest alongside BB King and ZZ Top was. The guest appearance of the well-known actor Bill Murray, who appeared on stage as a 'fun act' in an Elvis jumpsuit, seemed strange. In April 2010 the unofficial label "Star" had released three CDs (strictly speaking, CD-Rs) under the title "Alternate Masters - Complete Studio Outtakes, Sides 1-3", which had a vinyl look (therefore also the title “Sides” instead of “Volumes”) and contained 85 alternative masters of Elvis songs (see our report of April 2nd, 2010). Now “Star” presents a sequel that again comprises three albums: “Alternate Masters - Complete Studio Outtakes, Sides 4-6”. Unfortunately, it is again only CD-Rs, so no 'real' pressed CDs. The content, however, is again very interesting, as it consists of a further 87 partly unpublished recordings from all of King's creative periods from the 50s to the 70s. According to the concept of the series, these recordings are alternative takes of well-known songs that come close to the master takes or are otherwise considered to be approximately perfect and in this respect are considered alternative masters. In contrast, the discs do not contain any scraps of conversation, rehearsals, aborted or unsuccessful takes and the like that are usually offered in publications with session outtakes.

In France this week the company "RDM Edition" released another cheap Elvis CD. The album is titled "Hound Dog" and contains 30 well-known Elvis songs, all of which are at least 50 years old for the usual legal reasons, i.e. from the years 1954 to 1960 at the most. RDM has put more effort into this than other manufacturers of this kind, in that the songs from "Good Rockin 'Tonight" to "It's Now Or Never" have been sorted chronologically on the CD. "Hound Dog" belongs to the series "A World Of Rock'n'Roll - The Original Version" by RDM, in which there are very similar CDs by Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent , Ritchie Valens and Fats Domino there.

The “Music Icons” auction, which the auction house “Julien's Auctions” held in Las Vegas last Thursday and Friday, June 24th and 25th, 2010, went much better than the last other auctions (see also our announcement dated May 7, 2010). The highest price went to the famous black and pink shirt, which Elvis wore under a jacket on June 5, 1956 on his second appearance on the Milton Berle TV show, which made history especially with the unleashed lecture by "Hound Dog". The shirt Elvis originally bought from the Lansky store in Memphis changed hands for $ 51,000. High prices were also paid for other Elvis items such as a Martin guitar from 1976/77 (13,000 dollars), an onyx and gold ring from the movie "The Trouble With Girls" from 1969 (15,000) and the blue velvet shirt from the cover of the 1958 EP “Christmas With Elvis” (17,000.00).

For many years, the branch of the fast-food restaurant chain "McDonald's" in Elvis' birthplace Tupelo has been different from all other restaurants in the globally successful chain in that it completely deviates from the globally uniform furnishing style of the branches and is instead decorated with many Elvis-style memorabilia . The rumors that “McDonald’s” will close its Tupelo restaurant, which is unique in this sense, have now proven to be false. It is correct that only the location will be changed: Instead of the previous establishment, the new "Elvis-McDonald’s" will be available from September 2010 on the corner of South Gloster Street and President Avenue and will also appear there in the style of the 50s. The unique Elvis facility is expressly retained, as branch manager Rob Hudson has announced.

The dealers like our Dutch shop partner "Elvis Corner" (s.Link "Shop" on the start page of our homepage) of course still have the photo book about Elvis ’success film of the same name with Ann Margret from 1964 in stock. The book that Joseph Tunzi produced together with Paul Lichter usually costs around 35 euros.

As has only now become known, the well-known Dutch journalist and Elvis biographer Lodewijk Rijff died on Thursday, June 10, 2010. He was 65 years old and, luckily, succumbed to cancer that was only brief. Lodewijk Rijff was an Elvis fan from the very beginning and in the course of his journalistic life had written countless articles about Elvis in magazines and daily newspapers, not only in the magazines he edited, "Muziek Parade", "Pop Biz" and "Veronica". Lodewijk Rijff became particularly well-known through his book "Elvis Presley - De Biography van een Fenomeen", which was published in 1977 and was one of the first Elvis biographies in Dutch. Lodewijk Rijff was the brother of Ger Rijff, a fan, collector and expert who is also very well known in the Elvis scene.

This is a sensation: Due to the huge worldwide response to the upcoming DVD and Blu-ray release, the idea is to show the concert documentary “Elvis On Tour” in some cinemas in the New York and New Jersey areas at the end of July 2010 (see p. our message of May 22, 2010), has been expanded enormously. Presented by Elvis Presley Enterprises (EPE), Warner Brothers and Fathom Events, “Elvis On Tour” will be shown on Thursday, July 29th, 2010 as part of a special “One Night Screening” in over 500 cinemas (!!) all over the USA are shown. All super cities like Chicago / Illinois, Atlanta / Georgia, Miami / Florida, Houston / Texas and Denver / Colorado as well as all metropolises in California like San Francisco and Los Angeles are included. It is also nice that cities in which Elvis appeared during the US tour filmed for "Elvis On Tour" in April 1972, such as Dayton / Ohio, Hampton Roads / Virginia, Jacksonville / Florida and San Antonio / Texas. On August 14, 2010 there will be a special screening of the film in the presence of former members of Elvis' accompanying choir "The Stamps Quartet" at the Orpheum Theater in Memphis as part of "Elvis Week". One can hardly believe it: After decades of downright stupid and neglected treatment by practically all official bodies, “Elvis On Tour” - and with it the concert Elvis of the 70s - is finally getting the attention and appreciation that has always been deserved and appropriate would have been!

Similar to "Elvis On Tour", the fans had to wait a long time for a contemporary form of release for the feature film "Elvis The Movie" by John Carpenter. After the film has finally been available on DVD since March 2010 ("The King’s World" reported), it will also be released on Blu-ray by the company "Shout Factory" in August 2010. "Elvis The Movie" from 1978 with Kurt Russell in the lead role as Elvis Presley is considered one of the few well-made feature films about Elvis ’life and career. Other roles include Shelley Winters (as Gladys Presley), Season Hubley (as Priscilla Beaulieu) and Pat Hingle (as 'Colonel' Parker). In the cinema and on television, as well as on VHS video cassette, the film has been very successful since the late 1970s. A release on DVD and now on Blu-ray had long been unsuccessfully requested by Elvis fans as was that of "Elvis On Tour".

What is believed to be the largest collection of records and CDs in the UK is for sale. The collection, which includes around 12,000 Elvis records from around the world, has been built up since the King's death in 1977 by a die-hard fan named Steve Lacey, a 44-year-old restaurateur. He now wants to part with his huge collection and only keep one 40 greatest hits sampler, whatever the reasons for the surprising decision. Officially, Lacey let it be known that reasons of space and a certain lack of understanding of his wife had made the difference. The auction house "Bramford’s" from Derby was commissioned with the sale, although the originally mentioned 4th of July 2010 as the day of the auction has since been canceled again. It is not yet clear when sales will actually begin.

It is currently unknown what the DVD will cost.

Herder-Verlag, based in Freiburg, will publish a new book in August 2010 under the title “Elvis is alive! - Publish the Lexicon of Suppressed Truths. The author of the 192-page softcover book, which costs 14.95 euros and will also be available as an audio book (speaker: Uwe Ochsenknecht), is a certain Bernd Harder, who sees himself as a critical, skeptical scientist. The publisher reports on the book: “Whether about Elvis or Michael Jackson, whether about the Freemasons or the Illuminati, whether about vampires, swine flu or the alleged end of the world: There are always several versions of a story. And it is not uncommon for astonishing facts and bizarre speculations to entwine around a core of truth. The 'Lexicon of Suppressed Truths' introduces them all - a colorful hodgepodge of conspiracy theories. ”Aha. Well, as long as the author doesn't come up with bizarre speculations about a core of truth about Elvis himself, everything will be fine ...

A strange argument is currently going on about the TCB tour bus, which Elvis once gave to his accompanying choir “J. D. Sumner & The Stamps ”and which was exhibited in the“ Elvis Heights ”museum in Tupelo, the birthplace of the King. The bus had recently been stolen from the museum grounds and found by the notified police at the company "Transport Trailers And Celebrity Coaches", which is apparently claiming ownership of the historic vehicle. How the matter ends will now have to be clarified in court.

At this point in time, more and more Elvis calendars for 2011 are appearing on the market, or at least they are being announced for publication soon. For example, the “Elvis Calendar 2011” from “Dream International” has just been released, which only contains well-known Elvis motifs, but at least presents a reasonably balanced mixture of images from all creative periods of the King of Entertainment, while other calendars are sometimes a bit one-sided are only focused on the 50s and early 60s. "Dream International" specializes in high-quality star calendars and in addition to Elvis already has calendars with the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Queen, Kiss, ABBA, Madonna, Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, Marilyn Manson, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Keanu Reeves , David Beckham, Ayrton Senna and many others. The British auction house "Fraser’s Autographs" based in the metropolis of London is offering a very interesting and unusual item for sale. It is Elvis' personal original copy of the screenplay for "King Creole", the film that Elvis had made in the spring of 1958 for the Paramount film company under the direction of Michael Curtiz and which is now considered to be the best Elvis feature film ever . The script is dated January 3, 1958 and is apparently in very good condition apart from slight signs of wear, which come from none other than Elvis himself. There is no autograph or any signature from Elvis in the document. "Fraser’s Autographs" is asking for a purchase price of at least 6,000 US dollars for the "King Creole" script.

Even in those corners of our planet where you really don't expect it, you always discover great appreciations from Elvis. A hitherto little-known and very impressive video clip that shows Elvis on June 26, 1974 in Louisville, Kentucky, has recently been circulating on the Internet. The regional TV station "WHAS 11" reported on Elvis ’concert in the city as part of his 1974 summer tour of the USA. The clip is one and a half minutes long and begins with well-known scenes from Elvis' shows in Louisville in November 1956, before the scene in June 1974 in which the broadcaster actually managed to get Elvis in the "Peacock Suit" when leaving his hotel to catch and film it professionally. During the brief interviews with fans in front of the sold-out “Freedom Hall”, where Elvis performed in front of 20,000 spectators that evening, connoisseurs will also notice a woman who also appears in the 1977 TV special “Elvis In Concert”. The pictures were taken during filming, but were also shot away from the film set.

Elvis Presley Enterprises (EPE) efforts to preserve the memory of the King may sometimes not be adequately recognized. However, what Americans occasionally come up with in terms of merchandising simply reaches the limits of what is bearable. A new article will be available for “Elvis Week 2010” that has already been presented, namely Elvis as “Mr. Potato Head "figure. "Mr. Potato Head "(Eng." Herr Kartoffelkopf ") is a figure that has existed since 1952 and is very popular especially with children in North America, which can be seen regularly on television and, of course, can also be bought as a toy in various designs. Together with the toy manufacturer "PPW Toys", EPE will bring out the figure in two different Elvis versions in August 2010, one in the 70s style (photo) and one in the 1968 comeback style.

In February of this year we pointed out that nowadays major sporting events happily no longer seem to be without King Elvis. B. as break or competition music or in the form of spectator outfits. And promptly there were several such Elvis encounters again at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver / Canada. Tomorrow, Friday, June 11, 2010, the new soccer world championship will begin in South Africa, and it is already clear that Elvis will be there too, namely in the form of the "If I Can Dream" cover by Terry Venables, the ex-trainer of the English team (see our message from June 1, 2010). We are excited to see which other 'Elvis goals' will be celebrated this time. Our team will keep their eyes and ears open in any case, but of course you are also invited to inform us of any sightings.

A few days ago, Ed Leek, one of the last surviving, very early Elvis companions, died in the USA. Ed Leek was a schoolmate and good friend of Elvis in the early 50s. In his possession was the very first Elvis record "My Happiness" / "That’s When Your Heartaches Begin", which the future King had recorded privately on Sun Records in June 1953 and which was only officially released in 1990, was thought to be lost for decades. Ed Leek, pictured with Sun Records secretary Marion Keisker examining the rediscovered record in 1989, leaves his wife Susan behind.

Somewhat surprisingly, the official collector's label “Follow That Dream (FTD)” is already bringing its next CD onto the market this June 2010. "How Great Thou Art" has been announced as a double CD as part of the "Classic Album" series. The fight for the future of the company CKX Inc., which among other things owns Elvis Presley Enterprises (EPE) and the rights to the name "Elvis Presley", seems to be getting more and more intense. One of the current three prospective buyers, the television producer and media businessman Allen Shapiro, has apparently found a financially strong ally in the businessman Irving Azoff (photo) who could increase his offer by up to 200 million dollars. Shapiro's opponents are on the one hand industry colleague Simon Fuller in association with banker Roger Jenkins and on the other hand the former CKX President Robert Sillerman. Meanwhile, in the face of the business spectacle, the voices of those angrily say that Lisa Marie Presley would never have given up the independence of EPE and should have sold the company to any group - be it CKX or whoever - should have been increasing.

Elvis tribute albums, i.e. CDs with Elvis songs in the versions of other artists, are a double-edged thing in fan circles. What some reject as uninteresting and perhaps even as a mess of the original versions, others see as deserved and appropriate appreciation of the King. And so the opinions will certainly diverge again when the Swedish pop and jazz singer Marina Martensson releases such an album in August 2010. The CD will be titled "My Tribute To The King". Further information is not yet known.

'E-books' are books that no longer appear as a printed edition, but can only be accessed digitally for a fee on the Internet and that you can print out yourself there if you want. One such e-book will be published next winter by the digital publisher “Andrews UK Limited”, the new book “Growing Up With Elvis In Britain”, in which the author Nigel Goodall spent his time as a teenager and a big Elvis fan in Great Britain over the years from 1962 to 1967. The book is intended to give a very lively and at the same time personal impression of the influence and importance Elvis had on society and especially on teenagers in Great Britain in the 1960s. Author Nigel Goodall is now considered an outstanding author in the English-speaking world. He has published over 20 books, including biographies on Elton John and Kylie Minogue. In 1978 he also co-produced the "Elvis Gospel Radio Special" in Great Britain.

There is very good news to hear from Sherrill Nielsen, Elvis' former accompanist, who was seriously ill with lung cancer. As his wife Brenda announced to "The King’s World" last night, the combined radiation and chemotherapy ended a few days ago resulted in a considerable shrinkage of the tumors. While the radiation treatments are now being stopped, the chemotherapy will continue for several weeks. After all, the treatment helped Sherrill (and hopefully will continue to help) that the singer and his lovingly caring wife will travel to Brenda's native Texas for a short vacation. Two new CDs are in preparation, on the one hand a new album with songs that Sherrill had recorded shortly before the outbreak of the disease, and on the other hand a new box set entitled "The Best Of Sherrill Nielsen" with 77 songs should appear shortly. In 2011, Sherrill continues to hope to return to the stage. We wish him all the best in the world for these plans and for his recovery!

The raffle for a number of valuable Elvis articles that we held for the one-year anniversary of "The King’s World" among our regular guests, the recipients of our e-newsletter, met with huge interest and participation. For this we would like to thank our regular guests very much! And just as warmly we would like to congratulate the winners of the anniversary raffle, namely Regina Buttgereit from Herscheid, who received the main prize, as well as Thomas Roetche from Frankfurt am Main, Harry Johnson from Monheim and Peter Klinger from Holzwickede. 'All Star Samplers' are CDs (formerly LPs) that contain the songs of many different artists. The low-cost German company, Membran, which recently released the 4-CD box “Don't Be Cruel” with 96 Elvis songs from the 1950s (see our message from May 19, 2010), now has two of them 'All Star Sampler' released, both of which also contain Elvis songs, but for legal reasons only songs from the 50s. The CD "Rock'n 'Roll - Made In USA" brings 23 songs by great stars of Rock'n'Roll such as Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Wanda Jackson and Jerry Lee Lewis, the latter of which is embarrassing misspelled the front cover ('Jerry Le Lewis'). "That's All Right" from Elvis is included. The (very early!) Christmas album "Santa Claus Is Rockin 'And Swinging" comes as a double CD and contains 40 Christmas songs mostly in rock'n'roll style by Chuck Berry, Brenda Lee, Gene Autry, Connie Francis, The Drifters and others. Elvis is represented with all eight songs of his 1957 set from "Santa Claus Is Back In Town" to "Blue Christmas" and "Silent Night". With “I Want Elvis For Christmas” by the Holly Twins and “I Want To Spend Christmas With Elvis” by Marlene Paula, there are also two Christmas tribute songs to the King.

There is currently some uncertainty about the future of Elvis' female backing choir of the 1970s "The Sweet Inspirations". While various European websites have reported that Myrna Smith is still very ill and the group is therefore looking for a replacement, Portia Griffin did not want to confirm this to Peter Beines from "The King’s World" over the phone. The well-known and successful American actor and director Dennis Hopper died last Saturday, May 29, 2010 at the age of 74 in Venice / California. He died of cancer. Hopper played alongside James Dean in the 50s in "Because They Don't Know What They Do" and "Giants" and later shone in classic films such as "Easy Rider" and "Apocalypse Now". There were several points of contact with Elvis. So Hopper was literally squeezed out by Elvis about James Dean, from whom the King wanted to learn as much as possible. Hopper, like Elvis, also had a romance with Natalie Wood. And in the end Dennis Hopper was convinced that Elvis was or could have become a great actor if he had not - in Hopper's opinion - been burned in the musical films of the 1960s.

My God, what can this man still sing! Bill Baize, former original member of Elvis' accompanying choir "The Stamps Quartet", was as announced last Saturday, May 29, 2010, as the star guest at the "Elvis 75 Birthday Party" of the traditional Dutch fan club "It's Elvis Time" came the place Tolbert near Groningen. For almost an hour, the now 70-year-old gospel singer stood all alone on stage in the “Dorpshuis”, singing songs from the religious genre with a still crystal-clear voice to backing tracks, which Elvis once had a little less religious audiences, including "Peace In The Valley", "His Hand In Mine", "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "He Touched Me" (top photo). Of course, “Sweet Sweet Spirit”, known from the Stamps Quartet's performance in “Elvis On Tour”, and “When It's My Time”, which Bill Baize had performed solo every now and then at Elvis' concerts in the mid-1970s, could not be missing allowed to. Later there was "How Great Thou Art" and "Seeing Is Believing" together with the really good country support act. For birthday child Peter Haan - the club president also celebrated his 65th birthday at the event - the star guest also presented "Happy Birthday". The reunion of Bill and Dorcas Baize with Peter and Sandra Beines from “The King's World” was marked by heartfelt joy, who in turn had interesting insider conversations with Peter Haan and Freia Roos from “It's Elvis Time ”as well as Sylvain Vertez from“ Elvis Memories Belgium ”and the Norwegian fan club legend Pal Granlund (bottom photo).

There is still a lot of back and forth about the company CKX Inc., to which Elvis Presley Enterprises (EPE) and the exploitation rights of the name 'Elvis Presley' also belong. According to reports, both ex-CKX president Robert Sillerman and media mogul Simon Fuller (owner of the casting show "American Idol" on American television) are trying to buy the whole company. According to unconfirmed reports in the Wall Street Journal, Fuller and banker Roger Jenkins have offered $ 600 million for the takeover. There is also interest in buying from the company “One Equity Partners”, which belongs to the “JP Morgan Chase” group. The mastermind behind this offer is the previously mentioned media businessman Allen Shapiro.

The American music magazine "Rolling Stone" publishes in a current special issue a - of course purely subjective and by no means representative let alone objective - list of the alleged "500 Greatest Songs Of All Time". Bob Dylan took first place in this list with the title "Like A Rolling Stone", also appropriately followed by the Rolling Stones, who came in second with "I Can't Get No Satisfaction". Third place went to John Lennon's “Imagine”, followed by “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye and “Respect” by Aretha Franklin. With “Hey Jude” as supposedly the best title, the Beatles only landed on place 8, but they are most frequently represented in the list with a total of 23 songs, followed again by the Rolling Stones with 14 songs. And Elvis? Well, as we know, the real king often has a hard time in such ratings by elitist rock critics. The magazine has included 11 Elvis songs in its 500 list, which puts Elvis behind the Beatles and the Rolling Stones in terms of frequency Rank 3. "Hound Dog" was placed highest in 19th place. Michael Jackson, incidentally, only appeared for the first time in 58th place ("Billie Jean").

In February 2010, the series of three successful "Rare Elvis" LPs that Elvis' record company RCA had brought onto the market in the early 1980s was continued by an unofficial CD called "Rare Elvis, Vol. 4" (see ours Message dated February 7, 2010). This bootleg sold so well among collectors that "Rare Elvis, Vol. 5" has now been added. The album contains a further 25 rare recordings, this time all from Elvis ’film soundtracks from the 50s and 60s (stereo masters, alternative versions, session outtakes). Among the rarities there are even four recordings that were previously unpublished, such as B. the unabridged full version of "I've Got To Find My Baby" and the alternative Harmony version of "Could I Fall In Love". The cover design of this “Rare Elvis” CD is again based on the model of the official 80s LPs.

Despite the successful sale of the collection of 26 singles, which we reported on yesterday, the London auction house “Fame Bureau” was likely to have been rather dissatisfied with the course of the auction last Thursday in London. A large number of the Elvis items on offer could not be sold because no bids were made. Only a few pieces went for big money like the medallion already mentioned in an earlier report that Conrad Hilton had given Elvis in Las Vegas in 1975 (sold for 60,000 British pounds) or Elvis' golden partnership cross from his relationship with Priscilla (see p . adjacent illustration, sold for 28,000 British pounds). A 1976 “Elvis In Concert” tour jacket achieved at least 3,000 pounds. In contrast, the pink and black 1957 Cadillac and the TCB chain intended for film director Norman Taurog were not sold, along with many less important parts.
