How do I choose the best ASMR microphone for me?

If you are at the beginning of your career as an ASMRist, of course you don't want to go wrong. You know that you can only stimulate the senses of your listeners if the sound recordings are recorded without interference. But you actually have no idea about microphones. Then let's see together what you should pay attention to when choosing the ASMR microphone that is right for you.

  1. Shooting direction
  2. Self-noise
  3. Binaural or omnidirectional
  4. connections

1. Recording direction

Should the microphone mostly record voice or sound recordings? Or both? It makes a difference whether the microphone is able to record sounds from several directions or whether it only picks up sounds from the front.

2. Self-noise

Microphones produce a signal even without the effect of sound: the inherent noise. Microphones are particularly suitable for ASMR recordings if the specified self-noise value (dB-A) does not exceed 19 dB-A. The information can be found in the respective product descriptions of the manufacturer.

3. Binaural or Omnidirectional

Binaural recordings are particularly suitable for playback via headphones. They create a three-dimensional impression and thus contribute to the listening experience. This usually requires two microphones, which then record the recording in the middle of the sound source. This creates the stereo effect for the listener later.

Omnidirectional microphones work differently. These pick up the tones equally from all directions. For the popular role-play scenes in particular, omnidirectional recordings are more suitable.

4. Connections

The microphones should have suitable connections so that they can be connected to the mobile phone, the video camera and the PC. Microphones with USB ports can be easily connected to a PC or laptop. However, like the Rode NT-USB, you often need an additional cable for active power supply.

Summary

The microphones presented above are sufficient to achieve good ASMR recordings. Of course, you can always buy better technology if you dig deeper into your own wallet. However, if you are still at the beginning, you shouldn't position yourself solely on your equipment and professionally capture the first notes. In order to reproduce the listening experience perfectly, it makes sense for the listener to purchase high-quality ASMR headphones.
