Underwater prospecting

This part of the field research is concerned with finding traces of settlement and objects that are embedded in the bottom of the water. Surface recordings can be distinguished from methods that penetrate the soil layers.



  • sonar
    This method (echo location of sound signals) measures the water depth and, if the measuring points are precisely positioned, creates a surface relief. Some frequency ranges can also record the density of the surface layer and thus distinguish areas of mud from bare gravel, for example.
  • Side scan sonar
    Sound waves emitted at an angle create a shadow image of the ground relief and thus make objects lying close to the bottom of the water visible.
  • ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle)
    Controlled diving device with camera and headlights (live image on the upper water control device)



  • sonar
    Some frequency ranges can penetrate the top soil layers and show their layer structure
  • Sub-bottom profiler
    The echo of high-energy, high-frequency impulses provides information about soil layers or buried objects.
  • Metal detectors
    generate eddy currents in metallic objects by means of pulsed magnetic fields, which cause signal changes in the receiving coil.
