Bundeswehr IT jobs in the military career

If you would like to join the Bundeswehr as an IT soldier, you can choose between different professions. And when it comes to careers, you have all the options. Because IT professions are represented everywhere. Even if you don't want to stay with the federal government as a contract or professional soldier after your training, you will find what you are looking for. Some IT jobs are ideal for voluntary military service. You can then switch to a company in the private sector as an IT specialist. But of course you can also do it the other way around and join the federal government with an IT training in your pocket. Admin in the career of the NCOs

The range of tasks as an IT administrator is varied and broad. A major focus of your work will be the detection of digital threats. Should a dangerous situation arise, you install mobile and highly secure server systems immediately so that sensitive data remains protected. In addition, you always have an eye on the server-based networks of the Bundeswehr and ensure that the existing systems are constantly improved.

In addition, you are involved in project management. You will work on IT projects so that they can be successfully advanced. This can include planning and reviewing security measures. Electronics technician for electronic warfare in the career of sergeants / boatmen or NCOs / mates

As an electronics technician for electronic warfare, you are a specialist when it comes to fending off invisible attacks. In a management position, you ensure that the Bundeswehr is operational and able to communicate. The electronic combat group that reports to you works with the most modern technologies and electronic weapons.

With your specialist knowledge, you will support your superiors in interpreting complex situation reports. You use state-of-the-art electronics to identify threats. You look for enemy radio and radar signals and intercept them. In addition, you use interference signals from electronic weapons to combat attacks in a tactically intelligent manner.

As an information technician in the Air Force, you are responsible for ensuring that the flow of information in and between military units and staffs works. In the field, you make sure that mobile server systems with the highest security standards are available as quickly as possible. You monitor server-based networks and modernize the existing systems. IT electronics technician in the career of the teams

One of your tasks as an IT electronics technician is to help ensure that the computer-aided processes function properly. For example, you can ensure that the data and information flows smoothly. Or you put new data processing systems into operation and maintain the existing systems. You will also carry out measurements and tests to find out whether the systems are working properly. If you discover errors, you replace defective components and repair the system.

IT forseniker in the career of sergeants or officers

Incident response and digital forsenics are your fields of activity as an IT forsenic. You are an expert when it comes to detecting, containing, stopping and investigating cyber attacks. To do this, you will conduct investigations, analyze IT systems and networks and detect attack patterns. You will develop methods and procedures to detect and defend against hacker attacks against the IT system of the Bundeswehr. You will also work on techniques and strategies that will help to correctly assess and investigate cyber attacks and forensic measures.

So that it becomes possible to effectively prosecute criminal offenses in cyberspace, you secure the traces on the digital devices and determine their sources. You will work with law enforcement agencies and support them in their investigations. As an expert, you are also an important point of contact in matters of IT security - across all departments.

IT network analyst in the career of sergeants or officers

As an IT network analyst, you are an expert in network analysis and sensor technology. In this function you monitor the networks of the Bundeswehr with an extensive SIEM system. The abbreviation SIEM stands for Security Information and Event Management.

In order to recognize attempted attacks and initiate suitable countermeasures, you work with different IDS and IPS. Behind these abbreviations are intrusion detection systems and intrusion prevention systems. The so-called HoneyPot systems are also part of your tools. The various systems enable you to detect irregularities in cyber space at an early stage and to prevent intrusion attempts by attackers. In addition, you have a comprehensive overview of the Bundeswehr's entire IT security infrastructure.

IT vulnerability analyst in the career of sergeants or officers

Weak point analyzes and pen tests at the Bundeswehr Cyber ​​Security Center and the Cyber ​​Operations Center: These are your areas of responsibility as an IT vulnerability analyst. You test where and whether the IT systems and the IT infrastructure have weak points. You check how effective the existing security mechanisms are in order to detect and prevent attacks. You develop technical security measures and contribute to a strong IT security organization. But of course you don't just work with machines. The Bundeswehr uses the PATRIOT weapon system. To do this, you set up telecommunication connections, look for faults and remove them. During air defense operations, you support the use of the weapon system so that threats from the air can be fought effectively. In doing so, you ensure, for example, that everyone involved in the mission can constantly communicate safely and reliably.

The requirements for working as an IT soldier

The requirements you have to meet if you want to start as an IT soldier in the German Armed Forces, of course, always depend on your job description and career. There are differences, especially when it comes to careers. However, a few conditions apply to all applicants. And one of these prerequisites is that you

  • have German citizenship.
  • are ready to be transferred nationwide as part of your work.
  • You agree to take part in foreign missions of the Bundeswehr.

  • are physically fit, healthy and mentally resilient.

Your educational qualification and the commitment period

Some jobs only provide instruction, others an apprenticeship and still others a degree. In addition, some careers include a leadership position from the start. Therefore, it depends on your professional goals which educational qualification you need to have. In general, however, you should definitely find an entry point for yourself. Because depending on the field of activity and career you need

  • no school leaving certificate at all,
  • the secondary school leaving certificate,

If you join the armed forces as a volunteer, you can commit yourself for seven to 23 months. Otherwise, the commitment period depends on your qualifications and your goals. Depending on her career and job, as a soldier she can move between two and 13 years.

Electronics technician for information and systems technology

As an electronics technician for information and systems technology, you not only put together suitable packages of hardware and software. Rather, you will program some complex systems and software solutions yourself. You will also adapt standard applications as required and provide the necessary interfaces. You are also there when it comes to identifying and eliminating faults.

Specialist for system integration

If you are a computer scientist specializing in system integration, you will take care of the Bundeswehr's IT systems. You plan and develop modern, future-oriented IT systems. You configure these in such a way that they meet the needs and wishes of the users. Setting up and maintaining IT systems is another area of ​​activity.

Your training follows the dual system. On the one hand, you will learn in the Bundeswehr training centers and, on the other hand, you will attend vocational school.

IT system electronics technician

Information technology networks are your field of activity if you decide to train and work as an electronics technician for information and telecommunications systems. You will develop needs-based IT solutions and implement them. Advising customers on site is just as much a part of your everyday work as installing IT systems, adapting hardware and software or ensuring support.

Intermediate service of telecommunications and electronic reconnaissance of the federal government

If you work as a civil servant in the middle service of the telecommunications and electronic reconnaissance of the federal government, you deal with information and news that are important for the federal government or the armed forces. This can, for example, be current reports on the situation in crisis areas. Or military data from countries in which the Bundeswehr is deployed. You are responsible for collecting the information, evaluating it and forwarding it to the appropriate departments.

Bachelor of Engineering / of Science in the advanced technical service in the field of defense technology

A bachelor's degree in the technical field creates the basis for successful work in the field of defense technology in the armed forces administration. There are several courses of study and different universities to choose from for such a degree. The course is carried out as a dual course of study. While you are studying, you are pursuing a civil service career at the same time. Internships in civil services of the Bundeswehr ensure that you get an insight into everyday working life and that you can already gain your first professional experience.

After completing your studies, you can either work at the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr in Koblenz. Or you can work in one of the military technical departments. They are spread over the entire federal territory. The Federal Office for Infrastructure, Environmental Protection and Services in Bonn and the Federal Office for Personnel Management in Cologne offer additional jobs. But you can also join an international institution with which the Bundeswehr works on armaments.

Especially for women: IT in the higher technical service specializing in defense technology

In the so-called MINT subjects - mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology - women are often outnumbered. But it is precisely in this area that specialists are urgently needed. As a supplement to the existing offer, the Bundeswehr has therefore launched a collaboration with the Bremen University of Applied Sciences. This means that up to ten civil servant candidates from the Federal Armed Forces administration can now do their bachelor's degree in the international women's computer science course per semester.

The requirements for applicants in the civilian sector

You must also meet certain requirements for training or studying in the civilian sector. Which these are depends on your career aspirations. For example, for an apprenticeship you sometimes need a secondary school diploma, while in other cases a good secondary school diploma is sufficient. For a degree, on the other hand, you must have at least a technical diploma. Good grades in German, math and physics bring you plus points. In some cases, the Bundeswehr also expects foreign language skills in English.

If you want to become a civil servant, you need German citizenship. The willingness to be transferred nationwide and to work as an officer in the service of the Bundeswehr for a certain period is also expected. In some cases, you also have to be ready to take part in assignments abroad.

Note the application deadlines!

In contrast to the military sector, there are often application deadlines for civilian careers that you have to adhere to. Your application for a civilian apprenticeship usually has to be submitted by the end of September if your career is to start in August of the following year. The training courses for civil servants begin in March. Your application must therefore be received by the Bundeswehr by the end of February of the previous year at the latest. The courses start in September. Studies only begin in March at the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences. If you want to study, your application deadline is six months before the start of your studies.
