While searching for a storm sewer project on Rani Jhansi Road, nearly 700 phone and internet connections, including the police emergency number, remained dead.

BSNL officials found underground cables in the area damaged after complaints about the police helpline number (112) not working did not work.

“We received information that the hotline was not working on Saturday morning. When we reached Rani Jhansi Road to investigate the matter, we found the cables uprooted. We immediately forwarded the calls to the hotline and started the repairs, ”said Kanwaljit Singh Shanker of BSNL SDO, adding that all connections should be restored by Sunday evening.

"The city government contractor had asked permission to dig along the street for the Smart City project, but also illegally dug the stretch diagonally and damaged underground cables," Shanker said.

Notably, three such incidents have occurred in the past month, with cables near Aarti Cinema Chowk and Malhar Road also damaged due to community projects.

MC Superintendent Engineer (SE) Rahul Gagneja said SE Ravinder Garg was responsible for these issues, but the latter was not immediately available despite repeated attempts.

Local councilor Narinder Sharma Kala said he told the contractor to find out why the cables were uprooted.
