How do computers identify fingerprints

Windows 10: Log in with a fingerprint instead of a password

01 Check if there is a scanner

In order to be able to use the simplified login, the respective PC must have a fingerprint scanner. This information can be found in the manual of the computer. You can see whether this component is activated under Windows in the Device Manager in the category Biometric devices. If not, you may have to import the appropriate drivers, which are usually offered on the computer manufacturer's homepage.

  12. Windows 10
To do this, first enter your current Windows password and click on the OK button.
  13. Windows 10
Then set your PIN. If desired, you can also use letters and symbols via the checkbox. It continues here with "OK".
  14. Windows 10
If everything went well, you can now use the function or add more fingerprints.

02 Perform configuration

After these prerequisites have been met, go to the Windows settings. This can be done via the start menu or via a shortcut Windows key + i take care of. From the overview page, navigate to Accounts / login options. If you are now on Windows Hello fingerprint and then on the button Set up, the configuration can be carried out using a wizard.

03 Capture fingerprint

The configuration consists of two parts. In the first, Windows needs to capture your fingerprint. To do this, move your finger, which is to serve as an identification feature for the login, over the scanner. The wizard will tell you exactly whether you have to swipe more to the right or left. If the detection fails, we recommend cleaning the sensor with a soft cloth or testing another finger.

04 Set PIN

In the second part of the setup, a PIN has to be defined as a fallback solution. An assistant will also accompany you in this step. First you have to enter the current password of your account, then you create a PIN. If you wish, you can also use letters and symbols for this. You can then log on to Windows using your fingerprint, as well as apps and services that support the feature. (ad)
