How should I upgrade kids

Approve what kids buy with a purchase request

With the "Purchase request" function, you can let children make their own decisions and still have control over their expenses.

This is how the purchase request works

If children with "purchase request" want to buy or load a new item, they send a request to the family organizer. The family organizer can use their own device to approve or deny the request. For example, if a child wants to buy an app, the family organizer can see the app and decide whether to allow it.

When the family organizer approves the request and completes the purchase, the item is automatically downloaded to the child's device. If the family organizer denies the request, no purchase or download will take place. If a child reloads a purchase, uploads a joint purchase, installs an update, or uses a redemption code, the family organizer will not receive a request.

Who can use the purchase request

Families can use the purchase request after they set up Family Sharing. The family organizer can activate the "purchase request" function for underage family members. It is activated by default for all children under the age of 13. You will be asked to set up the purchase request if you invite anyone under the age of 18 to join your family group.1

When a family member turns 18 and the family organizer turns off the purchase request, the family organizer cannot turn it back on.

Switch purchase request on or off

If you're the family organizer, use your own device to turn the request to buy on or off.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap your name.
  3. Tap on "Family Sharing".
  4. Tap on "Purchase Request".
  5. Tap the family member's name.
  6. Use the selector to toggle the purchase request on or off.

On the Mac

  1. Choose Apple menu ()> System Preferences, then click Family Sharing.
  2. Click on "Family" in the sidebar.

This is how you can approve or reject a request

If you're the family organizer, use your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch, or Mac to approve or decline a request.

  1. Open the message to see the item that the family member wants to buy. Can't find your purchase request notifications?
  2. Approve the purchase or decline the request.
  3. If you agree, sign in with your Apple ID and password to complete the purchase.

What's next?

After the item is purchased, it will be added to your child's account.2 If you've enabled purchase approval, the item will also be shared with the rest of the family group.

If you decline a request, your child will receive a notification that you have declined the request. If you decline the request or do not make the purchase, the child will have to make the request again. Requests that you reject or do not confirm will be deleted after 24 hours.

How to choose a different approver

The family organizer may allow another adult parent or legal guardian in the group to manage purchase requests. Only one adult is required to process an inquiry. The decision is final and a purchase is irreversible.

  1. Open "Settings".
  2. Tap your name.
  3. Tap Family Sharing, then tap the appropriate family member.
  4. Tap on "Role".
